Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Sensorimotor psychotherapy helps people to develop mindful awareness of what is happening in their bodies.  It is especially useful for people who feel disconnected from and/or overwhelmed by their bodies due to trauma or significant relational wounding.  It is a gentle therapy that develops your abilities little by little, at a pace that is manageable and empowering.  As you make gains, there is a strong focus on integrating those gains into your everyday life, so that every session helps you take a step forward.

Sensorimotor psychotherapy is developed from 6 foundations:

  1. Unity: everything in the universe is interconnected
  2. Organicity: as a living being, you have within you what you need to re-balance yourself
  3. Holism: mind, body and spirit are interrelated, and the body is your access point for re-harmonising your whole self
  4. Non-violence: your healing journey will be approached safely, with acceptance and compassion for where you are at right now
  5. Mindfulness and Presence: wisely bringing attention and curiosity to the body is a key strategy for bringing about healing
  6. Relational Alchemy: the therapeutic relationship is a key aspect of healing, and each relationship has unique properties that present both challenges and opportunities for healing

Sensorimotor psychotherapy works from the ground up, with a focus first on your 5 senses, your sensations, your movements, moving eventually to more interpreted aspects of your presence, like emotion and cognition.
